The Palatal Expansion Procedure
The process of palatal expansion begins with a thorough consultation, during which Dr. Maddahi will evaluate the structure of your child’s jaw and teeth. If palatal expansion is recommended, a custom expander will be designed to fit the roof of the mouth. This device is typically attached to the upper molars with metal bands.
Over the course of several weeks to months, the expander is gradually adjusted to widen the upper jaw.
Dr. Maddahi will provide detailed instructions on how to activate the device, usually involving turning a small key to expand the appliance slightly. The process is gentle, allowing the jaw to adjust slowly and comfortably.
Once the desired expansion is achieved, the device remains in place for a period of time to stabilize the new bone growth. Afterward, Dr. Maddahi may recommend additional orthodontic treatment, such as braces, to complete the alignment process.
Your Recovery Process
Recovery from palatal expansion is generally smooth, with most patients experiencing only mild discomfort as the device is adjusted. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage any initial soreness during the first few days. It’s important to maintain good oral hygiene throughout the treatment, as the expander can make it more challenging to brush and floss effectively. Dr. Maddahi will provide guidance on keeping the device and teeth clean to prevent plaque buildup and other complications.
Patients are encouraged to follow up regularly with Dr. Maddahi to monitor progress, ensure the expansion is proceeding as planned, and make any necessary adjustments. Once the treatment is complete, your child will enjoy a properly aligned jaw, improved oral function, and a healthy, beautiful smile that will last for years.
